Overview
The Novak are an indigenous steppe–foothill mounted culture defined by endurance, survival, and constant pressure from the Kaelruun. Although widely regarded as nomadic raiders, Novak society is anchored to a network of fortified Veinholds built around ancient mining complexes in the Vidar foothills. Their civilization combines mobile steppe bands with permanent subterranean population centers. Life among the Novak is shaped by scarcity, conflict, difficult terrain, and the need for continual adaptation.

The Novak's preferred mount is the native Strider, whose exceptional sure-footedness enables travel and mounted warfare across the stony steppe and steep mountain approaches. Novak skill with these animals also figures prominently in their knowledge of Wolf Creek Pass, a dangerous crossing of the Inner Vidars.

----

Geographic Bond
The Novak inhabit the Novak Steppe and neighboring Vidar foothills. Despite its name, their homeland is not a uniform expanse of level grassland. It is a broad, rocky steppe marked by broken ground, steep elevation changes, sparse vegetation, and transitions from high country toward sea level.

The region is bounded by immense forest systems to the north and south; a deep, connected lake-and-river barrier associated with the Great River lies to the east. To the west, the young, sharp mountains of the Inner Vidar Range present an even more severe barrier. These boundaries strongly influence Novak travel, settlement, and warfare.

Open and broken steppe supports herding and mobile bands, while the foothills offer mineral resources, defensible positions, and access to the Veinholds. The terrain demands mobility without sacrificing caution: a sure-footed mount may move readily across rocky ledges and streambeds while rejecting unstable mud or concealed ground. Dense forest and swamp environments, particularly the Wilds, constrain Strider-mounted forces and are generally avoided during deep expeditions.

----

Survival Model
Novak survival depends on hunting, herding, resource extraction, and raiding. Steppe bands obtain food through hunting and foraging, while Veinholds provide long-term storage, metalworking, and protection. As population increases beyond what local resources can sustain, the Novak have historically relied more heavily on raiding neighboring regions.

Scarcity and the threat of Kaelruun incursions are persistent pressures. The Novak's survival system rests on cooperation between their mobile surface communities and permanent mountain settlements rather than either approach alone.

----

Settlement Structure
Novak society is centered on four major Veinholds, each established around mineral-rich veins in the Vidar foothills. Beginning as mines, these complexes expanded into subterranean networks of habitation, storage, and smithing. Their entrances are heavily fortified and often concealed, forming defensible choke points.

Above ground, dispersed steppe bands range across the homeland. These bands provide food and materials to the Veinholds and form the principal mounted raiding force. The steppe sustains the Veinholds through mobile resource gathering; the Veinholds provide protection, continuity, and production for the wider population.

----

Social Order
Novak society is governed by a Council of Elders divided into male and female roles.

The male council oversees protection and prosperity of the Veinhold, directs war efforts, trains boys into men, and judges disputes. The female council oversees pair bonding, trains girls into women, safeguards household welfare, and may petition the male council for judgment against neglectful or failing household leaders.

Elders are deeply revered, with authority tied to age and experience. Female elders hold particular influence in family and long-term community matters. The two councils fulfill distinct but interdependent responsibilities.

----

Reproductive System
Marriage among the Novak is structured around clan survival, resource stability, and long-term population growth rather than individual selection. Unions are commonly arranged between clans, often from an early age, with formal pairing occurring once both individuals can contribute to Veinhold or steppe life.

Marriage follows strict exogamous rules: individuals may not marry within their own clan or lineage. Such arrangements strengthen alliances between Veinholds and roaming bands, supporting resource sharing and mutual defense.

Betrothal agreements involve exchanges of goods and obligations. The groom's clan contributes livestock, weapons, or captured goods; the bride's side provides crafted materials or access to Veinhold networks.

Residence is generally patrilocal, with the couple joining the groom's associated Veinhold or steppe band. Children are vital to long-term survival, labor, and future raiding strength. As population increases beyond local carrying capacity, reliance on raiding expands.

Widow remarriage within the wider clan network is common to preserve protection and continuity. Higher-status individuals may take multiple wives to reinforce alliances, although most Novak marriages remain monogamous.

Striders and Horsemanship
The Novak developed their mounted traditions around the native Strider, an enduring and generally docile animal approximately the size of a mustang. Its shaggy coat, long flexible neck, and hard cloven hooves distinguish it from a horse. The Strider is most valued for extraordinary sure-footedness: it carefully judges the ground beneath it, tests uncertain footing, and may refuse to step onto surfaces it considers unsafe.

This instinct evolved in the Novak homeland's harsh, rocky terrain, where a serious fall can be fatal. Striders are highly capable on steep trails, uneven stone, and rocky streambeds, and they are notably difficult to unseat through ordinary missteps. Their long-distance endurance and ability to make use of coarse vegetation also suit them to journeys between widely separated watering sources.

Striders are not universally superior to horses. They are slower in short bursts, poorly suited to heavy draft work, and uncomfortable when forced through deep mud or into water where their feet cannot reach the bottom. They can swim but are not dependable mounted swimming animals without careful training. Their usual calmness may give way to stubborn refusal, bucking, nipping, or spitting when a rider tries to force them into conditions they strongly resist.

Novak riding skill therefore depends on cooperation with the mount, not simply command over it. Experienced riders learn to trust a Strider's hesitation at unstable ground, recognize its limits, and exploit the rugged terrain in which it excels. This partnership supports the Novak tradition of mobile mounted warfare.

Wolf Creek Pass and the Feat of Bravery
Wolf Creek Pass is the only known east–west crossing of the Inner Vidar Range. Situated high on the Great Divide at approximately 10,856 feet, it is a narrow, exposed, rocky mountain passage, with steep approaches, severe weather, and little margin for error. It is not a casual trade route or an easy alternative to other crossings of the broader mountain system.

Novak riders and their Striders have long been capable of making the journey, but the passage remains a harrowing test of both animal and rider. The Strider's exceptional footing improves the chance of negotiating the high trails; it does not remove the dangers of exposure, unstable rock, or a single disastrous mistake.

For younger Novak warriors, attempting the crossing can serve as a feat of bravery and skill on the path toward war leadership. Successfully negotiating Wolf Creek Pass demonstrates courage, endurance, horsemanship, and the judgment needed to survive dangerous terrain. It is an extraordinary accomplishment rather than ordinary travel.

The Novak knew the route before colonial contact and were the people who showed it to the colonists. That knowledge forms an important part of their historical contribution to movement across the Inner Vidars.

Wolf Creek Pass must be distinguished from the more northerly Vidar Pass through the Outer Vidars. The northern passage is a much broader and more accessible corridor and eventually accommodated a railroad. The high crossing at Wolf Creek has no comparable role as a routine infrastructure corridor.

----

Combat Doctrine
Novak warfare centers on mounted mobility, endurance, and terrain control. Strider-mounted warriors excel at long movements, rapid strikes, harassment, and withdrawal into country that is difficult for conventional cavalry to follow. Their mounted methods emphasize the same mobility and raiding skill associated with accomplished horse-warrior cultures, while remaining adapted to the Strider's lower sprint speed and distinctive footing instincts.

Weapons include war lances, naginata-style polearms for mounted combat, thrown javelins, bolas for disruption, and horn bows for ranged fighting. Novak tactics favor repeated pressure, hit-and-run engagements, and the exploitation of rocky ground and foothill routes rather than prolonged direct battles against superior forces.

In Kaelruun swarm years, Novak forces fall back toward the foothills and defend Veinholds and mountain gaps, using elevation and choke points to compensate for numerical disadvantage. Outside swarm years, they actively engage Kaelruun forces, making them the only tribe to do so consistently.

----

Inter-Tribal Relations
The Novak maintain hostile or opportunistic relationships with neighboring peoples.

They raid the Mera'kai along the fringes of Titania, cross the Great River to strike the Thalan of the plains, and push south toward the fringes of the Wilds. They generally avoid the dense interior of that region, where tangled foliage, saturated ground, and uncertain footing sharply reduce the effectiveness of mounted Striders.

The Novak's relationship with the Kaelruun is defined by persistent threat and recurrent conflict, shaping their military priorities, settlements, and survival practices.

----

Cultural Systems
Novak culture places great importance on survival, strength, courage, and the balance between war and home. Authority is divided between male and female councils, reflecting the interdependence of external defense and internal stability.

Elders are respected as holders of experience, knowledge, and judgment. Female elders are believed to gain heightened perception with age; some are thought to become better able to interpret signs and communicate with the spirit world as death approaches.

A central Novak belief holds that killing—whether animal or enemy—transfers strength to the individual. Hunting and combat therefore possess spiritual as well as practical significance.

The dangerous ride through Wolf Creek Pass occupies a distinctive place in the warrior tradition. For an aspiring war leader, the achievement signifies more than the ability to survive a mountain journey: it demonstrates courage tempered by the discipline to know when to trust one's mount, halt, or turn back.

----

Death & Burial
The Novak regard death as a transition rather than an end. They believe that strength accumulated during life becomes the substance of the spirit in the next world and forms the foundation of a new existence.

Those who live stronger lives through survival, combat, and endurance are believed to enter the next world with greater power. As a result, risk is accepted as part of life rather than treated solely as something to avoid.

Death is common because of scarcity, conflict, Kaelruun incursions, and environmental hazards. Burial customs are practical and shaped by local terrain, placing less emphasis on monuments than on continuity of the living.

----

Historical Continuity
The Novak emerged as a steppe–foothill culture long before colonial contact. Their Veinholds grew through generations of mining and expansion, while native Strider domestication made sustained mounted travel and warfare across rugged country possible.

Their knowledge of the dangerous Wolf Creek crossing preceded colonial exploration. By revealing that route to colonists, the Novak contributed vital knowledge of the Inner Vidar mountains without making the pass any less formidable.

Colonial contact introduced new technologies but did not fundamentally overturn the Novak's dual settlement system. By the modern era, Novak communities were partly integrated into broader Gondaran society while retaining a distinct cultural identity, a strong Veinhold tradition, and enduring mounted heritage.

----

Legacy
The Novak legacy is one of survival through terrain knowledge, endurance, and specialized mobility. Their Veinhold settlements, mounted raiding doctrine, willingness to confront the Kaelruun, and historical knowledge of Wolf Creek Pass have shaped frontier experience across Gondara.

Their association with the Strider remains central to that legacy. More than a means of transportation, the animal embodies the principle that has long defined Novak life: survival depends not merely on speed or strength, but on knowing how to cross dangerous ground.
