The Stonehide Grath (Titanopelta grathensis) is a large, heavily armored, insect-eating mammal native to the margins and more open corridors of Titanwood forests in Gondara. With a long, narrow head, powerful digging forelimbs, overlapping keratin scales, and a heavily clubbed tail, the Grath combines features reminiscent of a giant pangolin and a giant anteater. Adults measure approximately 5–6 feet in length and weigh 250–400 pounds. The species is also recorded at low-to-moderate density around the forested edges of the Titania Basin.

Stonehide Graths are generally slow-moving, solitary, and extraordinarily reluctant to leave a good food source. They may spend long periods living alongside insect-rich fallen Titanwood or near a large ant colony. Despite their formidable weapons, they are neither active hunters of large animals nor habitually hostile to those passing nearby. Their defining behavioral rule is simpler: they do not tolerate being touched. Their distinctive guttural gargle is widely understood as a warning to keep one's hands—and the rest of one's body—to oneself.

Physical contact from another species can provoke an explosively fast sequence of claw and tail strikes. If the disturbance persists, the Grath withdraws into a completely enclosed armored ball and waits, sometimes dozing, until it is left alone. This combination of indifference to nearby animals and uncompromising response to physical contact makes it one of Gondara's more easily misunderstood—and unexpectedly dangerous—large mammals.

Physical Description
The Stonehide Grath is a substantial, low-built mammal with heavy shoulders, extremely powerful forelimbs, a long muscular tail, and a narrow, elongated head. Its general proportions recall a greatly enlarged pangolin crossed with an anteater. It has a long, sticky tongue for removing insects from cavities, tunnels, and opened colonies.

The forelimbs bear large, heavy, curved claws. These are not specialized for fighting alone. They allow the Grath to excavate earth, open ant and termite nests, work its way through old timber, and tear into substantially decayed wood. The claws also serve as dangerous close-range defensive weapons. A Grath may look ponderous while feeding, but its short-range striking movements are surprisingly rapid.

Unlike an arboreal specialist, the Grath is not a regular high-canopy climber. It is capable of scrambling over, around, and onto large fallen trunks and other timber obstacles in search of insects. Its strength is suited to breaking apart rotten material, not effortlessly tearing through healthy, sound Titanwood.

Marbled Scale Armor
The Grath's most conspicuous feature is a flexible coat of overlapping keratin scales, broadly comparable in construction to pangolin armor rather than the bony plates of an armadillo. The overlapping arrangement permits movement and, crucially, allows the animal to curl into a nearly seamless defensive sphere with all vulnerable parts protected inside.

Three dominant color forms are recognized:

* Black: A predominantly dark animal, generally carrying lighter contrasting marbling.
* Gray: A gray base marked by contrasting light or dark veins and irregular pools of color.
* Eggshell white: A pale animal, generally bearing darker marbled markings.

The patterns resemble mineral veins and colored pools running through polished stone. Most individuals have a single dominant base color rather than a mixture of all three forms; genuinely mixed-color Graths are rare. Marble patterns vary from individual to individual.

Young Graths possess a natural sheen that makes their patterned scales resemble polished marble. That surface finish gradually wears away. Older adults take on a duller, weathered-stone appearance even while the underlying pattern remains visible. Age can therefore affect the apparent texture and brightness of the armor without necessarily changing the individual's original color form.

Scale Growth, Repair, and Scarring
The scales remain attached and continue thickening and hardening as the animal matures; the species does not routinely discard and replace its entire armor. Young Graths possess a greater capacity for scale regeneration. A juvenile may regrow a scale that has been torn out completely.

After puberty, a completely lost scale does not grow back. Instead, the exposed site closes into a substantial, permanent scar. This does not mean an adult's scales are incapable of healing: if some portion of the original scale remains, growth can repair the missing area. A split scale can gradually rejoin as it heals. Thus an older Grath may carry both repaired scales and unmistakable unarmored scars from past encounters.

This difference between partial damage and complete removal is central to the species' armor biology. The greater hardness of an old Grath's scales does not make it immune to permanent injury.

Tail and Keratin-Sheathed Club
The muscular tail terminates in a solid bony club protected by a hard keratin sheath. Some form of this club is present from early life. In youngsters it is comparatively small, rounded, and baseball-like in outline, with a reasonably firm covering. As the Grath matures, the structure becomes larger, denser, and harder, eventually acquiring a distinctly elongated, American-football-like shape with tapered, pointed ends.

The tail can be brought around the body with remarkable speed and force. Its club is a striking weapon, not simply an ornament or a warning display. During the Grath's final defensive curl, the entire tail—including the club—is withdrawn into the protective enclosure.

Habitat and Distribution
Stonehide Graths favor Titanwood forest margins and sparsely vegetated corridors, particularly places where old timber, accessible soil, and productive insect colonies occur together. The species has an established but not especially dense presence along the forest edge of the Titania Basin. Its full population and distribution throughout other suitable Titanwood landscapes have not been quantified.

A particularly attractive residence is a giant fallen Titanwood trunk that has decayed far enough to harbor extensive insect populations. Such trees can be hundreds of feet long and enormously broad. A single large trunk may support several Graths occupying separate parts of it without those animals ever needing to interact physically.

Graths may excavate burrows beneath fallen trunks, beside them, or even within exceptionally decayed sections of the wood. They also settle close to massive ant colonies, using nearby burrows or shelter while they feed. Their occupation of a site may last until its food supply has been substantially depleted.

Diet and Foraging
The Stonehide Grath is an insect specialist. Large termite colonies and ant nests are especially valuable food sources, although it also consumes other accessible insects. Its long, adhesive tongue allows it to reach into galleries and crevices that its large muzzle cannot enter.

When feeding within a fallen Titanwood, a Grath uses its claws to pull apart weakened wood, expose galleries, and reach concentrations of insects. At earthen ant mounds, it excavates or opens sections of the colony to reach its inhabitants. These activities may produce conspicuous claw marks, excavated soil, scattered rotten wood, and burrow openings.

An animal that finds a productive food source has little incentive to travel. Graths are famously sedentary and home-bound. Their routine can consist of eating, resting, making small excavations, and returning to the same shelter. Their capacity for explosive defensive action should not be confused with a normally energetic or wide-ranging lifestyle.

Activity and Movement
Wild Graths are predominantly nocturnal, although they are not incapable of moving or feeding by day. Captive animals have been observed adopting a somewhat different activity pattern, often becoming most active in the afternoon and remaining active until around midnight. These observations should not be treated as proof that all individuals follow an identical schedule.

Most of the time, a Grath moves deliberately and conserves energy. Nevertheless, its forequarters and tail can accelerate in sudden, powerful motions. This contrast between ordinary sluggishness and extraordinary short-range striking speed is one reason people and predators underestimate the species.

Temperament and Personal Space
A Stonehide Grath is contact-averse, not conventionally territorial. It does not usually attempt to control a large feeding territory, drive away all nearby animals, or monopolize an entire fallen tree. Several Graths may feed, rest, and burrow quite close to one another so long as they do not touch. A mother and her now-independent offspring may continue living along the same enormous trunk without special conflict.

The familiar deep, gargling vocalization communicates the species' overriding preference: do not touch. Graths may gargle when they become aware of someone nearby, including another Grath, without being frightened or preparing to attack. A nearby animal that respects the boundary may be ignored entirely while the Grath continues feeding.

The gargle should not, however, be mistaken for a polite request followed by a graduated series of threats. There is generally no separate warning immediately before the defensive blow. For a non-Grath intruder, the moment of physical contact may be followed by full-force retaliation.

Other Graths are treated somewhat differently. Accidental contact between two members of the species typically produces one swipe or one tail strike, not the complete three-part defensive combination. The animals may then separate and return to their own activities. Even family members are expected to respect each other's space.

Defense: Strike, Then Shield Wall
The Stonehide Grath has two complementary defenses: an unusually destructive initial response and a nearly complete armored withdrawal. It does not ordinarily pursue an offender in order to continue a fight; its goal is to end unwanted contact.

The Three-Strike Combination
When an animal of another species physically interferes with a Grath, its characteristic defensive combination is:

# Right foreclaw: A sudden, powerful swipe.
# Left foreclaw: A rapid follow-up from the opposite side.
# Tail club: A forceful whipping strike with the hardened club.

These movements form a fast, closely connected combination, rather than three separate warnings. Each can cause serious injury, and even a large predator may find the speed and force startling. The strikes are immediately forceful; the Grath does not normally begin with a deliberately harmless tap to test an intruder's intentions.

This is the characteristic response to other species. Contact between Graths generally draws the more limited one-strike correction described above. Courtship involves a separate context in which a female may moderate the force of tail contact toward an approaching male.

Complete Defensive Curl
If the intruder persists through the initial combination, the Grath does not necessarily fight until exhausted. It curls into a fully closed armored ball, enclosing its head, belly, limbs, tail, and club behind its overlapping scales. No deliberate opening or exposed club is left for a continued exchange of blows.

Once curled, the animal typically remains closed until the disturbance has passed. It may even doze while waiting for the offender to lose interest. It does not normally spring back out to continue the battle. When the danger leaves, it unfolds and returns to its ordinary business of feeding and resting.

The pattern is therefore best understood as maximum immediate resistance followed by maximum passive protection. Its strength lies in ending a dangerous encounter quickly or, failing that, making continued attack extraordinarily difficult.

Sexual Differences
Male and female Graths are very similar in overall body size and appearance; distinguishing them at a distance is often difficult. Males tend toward darker base colors, but coloration alone is not a dependable indicator of sex.

The more meaningful structural distinction concerns the tail. Females generally have longer tails, while males tend to have heavier tails. The female's extra reach is especially important when she is accompanied by dependent young.

Both sexes possess substantial claws and clubs and can defend themselves violently. Females with offspring may also hiss, a vocalization associated with maternal defense rather than an everyday call from all females. A female without dependent young normally relies on the same gargling boundary call heard from males.

Courtship and Reproduction
Graths are solitary for most of their lives. Males nevertheless approach females when seeking to mate, encountering the same powerful tail that ordinarily enforces personal space.

Female responses during courtship may include tail strikes of varying force. An apparently receptive female may give a comparatively gentle, single "love tap" rather than a fully committed defensive blow. An unwelcome suitor may receive a much harder rejection. The interactions are not a fixed ritual in which every strike has identical strength; the male must respond to the female's acceptance or refusal. The male's own armor affords some protection, but it does not eliminate the possibility of injury.

Females normally produce one offspring at a time. The young are born equipped with their characteristic scales, claws, and a small tail club, although the protective structures are initially far softer and less dense than those of an adult. The scales harden as the juvenile develops.

The species reaches sexual maturity at approximately three years. Gestation length, mating seasonality, and other reproductive intervals have not been established.

Maternal Care and Juvenile Development
Riding on the Mother's Back
A young Grath ordinarily travels on its mother's armored back, gripping the spaces and edges between overlapping scales with its small claws. It is a functional grip, not an infallible one. Babies sometimes slip or fall off and must scramble back up without being carried or lifted by the mother.

A female normally provides direct care for approximately eight to nine months. She assists her offspring in feeding, opens insect nests and rotten timber for it, and teaches it to locate and extract its own insects. The youngster begins eating ants, termites, and other insects while it is still nursing. Maternal care is therefore more involved than merely providing a place to ride.

Males do not have an established role in rearing offspring; their ordinary lives remain centered on solitary feeding and defending their own personal space.

Maternal Defense
A mother with dependent young is less tolerant of close approach than an unaccompanied adult. She may hiss when another animal enters her protective space. Unlike an ordinary Grath, which generally retaliates after physical contact, a mother may strike someone who has simply approached within the reach of her tail.

This boundary can be difficult for a person to judge. A human facing the mother head-on may have no clear view of the full length of the tail behind her. The mother, however, can whip the longer tail around her body with startling speed. An observer who believes they have not come close enough to touch the animal may already be within striking range.

Where a non-Grath intruder continues to press the encounter, a mother may repeat the usual right-claw, left-claw, tail-club combination as many as three times, potentially delivering nine successive strikes before withdrawing. This is a possible escalation, not an obligatory count in every encounter; an offender that leaves may end the conflict sooner.

Falls, Curling, and Early Independence
A mother's sudden twisting strikes can dislodge the infant from her back. The youngster is generally expected to recover its footing and return by itself; the mother may check on it, but does not reliably stop everything to retrieve it.

Young Graths can curl into their own armored balls even though their scales and small clubs lack adult density. A particularly memorable field observation describes a baby thrown from its mother's back, curling up in midair, bouncing upon landing, and rolling into a bush. This demonstrates the early development of the curling reflex, but should not imply that every such fall is safe or harmless.

When a threatened mother finally closes into her own defensive ball, her offspring is generally left outside rather than tucked into the adult's armor. The youngster has its own curling response for protection.

At roughly eight or nine months, the juvenile gradually becomes independent. The mother does not need to drive it away: the young Grath develops the same aversion to being touched and begins keeping its own space. Mother and offspring may remain near one another, even on the same fallen trunk, exchanging gargles if either comes too close.

Predators and Survival
Healthy adult Graths are unattractive prey for most predators because of their claws, extraordinarily powerful tail strikes, and ability to seal themselves inside heavy armor. A sufficiently hungry or aggressive Titan Bear may nevertheless kill a Grath; the species is well protected, not invulnerable.

Loss of individual scales can have long-term consequences for adults. Although cracked or partly damaged scales can repair, a scale torn away in its entirety leaves a permanent scar and an area less well armored than the surrounding body. This vulnerability helps explain the value of an immediate, decisive response followed by withdrawal rather than an extended struggle.

Juveniles are less well protected. Their scales and clubs are lighter and softer, even though they already possess the adult body plan and defensive curling behavior.

Longevity
The oldest documented captive Stonehide Grath lived 38 years. Individuals may be capable of surviving more than 40 years, but this remains a prediction rather than an observed maximum. No reliable average lifespan for wild animals has been established.

A Grath's increasingly weathered scales, thickened armor, permanent scars, and mature tail club may offer clues about its life history, but none is a precise age-measuring device.

Relationship with Humans
Stonehide Graths are dangerous chiefly because they are so easily mistaken for tolerant animals. A Grath may continue feeding as a person watches from nearby. It may gargle repeatedly without approaching, retreating, or displaying the conspicuous aggression that most people associate with a dangerous animal. This indifference is frequently mistaken for permission to pet, prod, climb onto, or otherwise handle it.

Such contact can provoke a near-instantaneous, full-force defensive combination. The animal's large claws and hardened tail club are capable of inflicting fatal injuries. Gondaran accounts attribute more human deaths to Stonehide Graths than to Titan Bears, despite the Grath's lack of interest in hunting people. The comparative toll is associated with human misjudgment and interference rather than predatory behavior. An exact fatality count has not been established here.

Maternal encounters are especially hazardous because the effective exclusion distance is determined by the full striking radius of the female's long tail, not the distance to her head or body. Her hiss indicates a protective response, but an approaching person may already be too close before recognizing the danger.

The simplest field rule is also the most reliable expression of the species' behavior: observe without touching, and give females with young enough room for their entire tails. A Grath that is left alone will generally prefer to return to its insects rather than pursue an encounter.
