Overview
The HB-40 Cathedral is Gondara's first strategic high-altitude bomber and one of the most secret aircraft projects undertaken by the Gondaran Air Corps.
Developed under extreme secrecy by the Advanced Projects Division of the Gondaran State Aviation Directorate, the Cathedral was designed to penetrate enemy airspace at altitudes and speeds beyond the practical reach of contemporary fighter aircraft.
The aircraft relies entirely upon altitude, speed, range, and operational secrecy for survival, carrying no defensive armament whatsoever.
A reconnaissance variant, designated PR-40 Cathedral, utilizes the same airframe fitted with advanced strategic mapping and photographic intelligence systems.
Development
The Cathedral program originated from Gondaran studies conducted during the late 1930s regarding the future of strategic warfare.
Military planners concluded that improvements in aircraft performance would eventually render conventional defensive gun turrets ineffective while simultaneously increasing aircraft drag and reducing range.
The solution was radical.
Rather than constructing a heavily armed bomber, Gondaran engineers sought to create an aircraft capable of flying so high and so fast that interception would become impractical.
The resulting project was designated a Black Program and received the highest classification levels within the Gondaran military establishment.
Design Philosophy
The Cathedral was built around four principles:
- Extreme altitude
- Extreme range
- High cruise speed
- Aerodynamic efficiency
Every aspect of the design was optimized to reduce drag and improve operational ceiling.
This philosophy resulted in the elimination of:
- Defensive turrets
- External bomb racks
- Excess structural protrusions
- Non-essential equipment
The resulting aircraft possessed an exceptionally clean aerodynamic profile.
Crew
| Position | Duty |
|---|---|
| Pilot | Aircraft commander |
| Co-Pilot | Secondary flight operations |
| Navigator | Long-range navigation |
| Bombardier / Camera Operator | Weapons delivery or reconnaissance operations |
| Flight Engineer | Engine and systems management |
Pressurized Fuselage
The Cathedral utilizes a fully pressurized cylindrical fuselage.
The structure incorporates:
- Reinforced pressure bulkheads
- Heavy structural framing
- Pressurized crew compartments
- Specialized observation ports
The aircraft is capable of sustained operations above 40,000 feet without requiring supplemental oxygen systems for routine crew activity.
The design philosophy was heavily influenced by submarine pressure-vessel construction techniques.
Powerplant
The aircraft is powered by four Gondaran Vortex Super radial engines.
Each engine incorporates:
- 28 cylinders
- Four-row radial arrangement
- Two-stage variable-speed turbosupercharger
- Meredith-effect exhaust augmentation
Together these systems generate:
10,800 horsepower total output
while maintaining power at extreme operational altitudes.
Armament
HB-40 Strategic Bomber
The HB-40 carries:
- Up to 10,000 lb of internal bombs
Available payloads include:
- High-explosive bombs
- Armor-piercing bombs
- Specialized strategic ordnance
All weapons are carried internally to preserve aerodynamic efficiency.
Defensive Armament
None.
Unlike conventional bombers, the Cathedral relies upon:
- Altitude
- Speed
- Secrecy
- Operational planning
for protection.
The aircraft carries no gun turrets or defensive weapon stations.
PR-40 Strategic Reconnaissance Variant
The PR-40 Cathedral replaces the bomb bay with a fully enclosed reconnaissance module.
Equipment includes:
- Long-range mapping cameras
- High-resolution reconnaissance cameras
- Flash-bomb dispensers
- Onboard photo-processing equipment
- Pressurized photographic laboratory
The aircraft is capable of conducting strategic mapping and reconnaissance missions thousands of miles from Gondaran territory.
Performance
| Characteristic | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum Speed | 400 mph |
| Cruise Speed | 345 mph |
| Combat Range | 4,000 miles |
| Ferry Range | 6,500 miles |
| Service Ceiling | 41,000 ft |
| Rate of Climb | 1,500 ft/min |
| Payload | 10,000 lb |
Infrastructure Requirements
The Cathedral's immense size and weight impose significant operational restrictions.
The aircraft requires:
- Reinforced concrete runways
- Minimum 6,500 ft runway length
- Specialized maintenance facilities
- Strategic air bases
The aircraft cannot operate from:
- Dirt airfields
- Grass strips
- Expeditionary landing grounds
As a result, Cathedral operations are limited to a small number of strategic air installations.
Operational Role
The HB-40 serves in:
- Strategic bombing
- Long-range strike operations
- Deep penetration missions
- Industrial target attacks
The PR-40 serves in:
- Strategic reconnaissance
- Cartographic surveying
- Intelligence collection
- Long-range photographic mapping
Production
Due to the aircraft's complexity and strategic importance, production is intentionally limited.
- Production Rate: 2 aircraft per month
- Planned Production: 24 aircraft (1940–1941)
Each airframe is individually assembled and receives extensive inspection before acceptance.
Summary
The HB-40 / PR-40 Cathedral represents one of the most ambitious aviation projects ever undertaken by Gondara. By combining pressurized high-altitude flight, strategic range, and exceptional aerodynamic efficiency into a single aircraft, the Cathedral provides Gondara with a strategic bombing and reconnaissance capability unmatched by most contemporary air forces.
