The Sewing Circle

The Sewing Circle is a foundational social institution within Gondaran society responsible for the welfare, placement, and communal representation of women. Every woman in Gondara is considered a member of the Circle, which operates through local chapters embedded within communities across the country.

The institution functions as both a social network and a protective body. It coordinates the support of women within the community, oversees aspects of household formation through its role in pair bonding, and may intervene when the welfare of women or children appears at risk.

The Circle is led locally by elder women who have completed their child-rearing years. These elders serve as stewards of the institution and act collectively to guide local Circle activities, review companionship arrangements, and assist women navigating major life transitions.

Although the Sewing Circle carries significant cultural influence and recognized authority within Gondaran society, it does not function as a formal court. Legal disputes ultimately fall under the jurisdiction of Gondaran civil courts, though the Circle may initiate investigations or raise concerns when household stability or personal safety appears threatened.

Through its community networks, institutional memory, and longstanding traditions, the Sewing Circle serves as one of the central pillars supporting Gondaran social stability.
