Overview

The AV-35-HT is the heavy tank configuration of the AV-35 armored vehicle system.

Developed as the final and most heavily armed variant of the platform, the HT integrates a 75mm high-velocity cannon with the reinforced armor system of the AV-35-MT, bringing the vehicle to its maximum designed combat weight.

While offering significantly increased firepower and strong frontal protection, the HT operates at the upper limits of the AV-35 chassis and exhibits reduced mobility and efficiency compared to lighter configurations.


Design Relationship

The AV-35-HT shares its full chassis, drivetrain, and structural layout with:

Construction

The AV-35-HT retains the standard AV-35 platform structure:

  • Wide low-pressure track system

At 30 tons, the HT places the suspension and drivetrain at their designed limit. While this does not result in abnormal failure rates, it produces noticeable differences in handling, responsiveness, and long-term wear compared to lighter variants.

Fire Control and Stabilization

The AV-35-HT retains the gyroscopic elevation stabilization system originally designed for the 56.25mm configuration.

When paired with the heavier 75mm cannon, the system can exhibit reduced stability during movement. The increased mass and recoil characteristics of the larger weapon occasionally cause overcorrection or tracking inconsistency.

As a result, approximately one in ten rounds fired on the move may deviate significantly from the intended point of impact.

This limitation does not affect stationary firing accuracy. Crews are trained to fire from short halts or controlled movement when engaging armored targets.


Amphibious Capability

The AV-35-HT is not amphibious.

The combined weight of reinforced armor and heavy turret exceeds the buoyancy limits of the platform.

Field testing demonstrated that removal of the turret allows the base hull to achieve flotation for controlled water crossing under engineering supervision.


Mobility

The AV-35-HT operates with reduced mobility compared to lighter variants:

  • Road speed: ~28–32 mph
  • Lower acceleration and responsiveness
  • Reduced fuel efficiency
  • Higher mechanical load

While still capable of sustained movement, the HT is no longer suited for rapid maneuver operations and requires more deliberate positioning.
