Overview

The AV-35-AM is the primary armored medical support vehicle of the Army of Gondara. Developed from the standard AV-35 chassis, the vehicle combines the functions of an armored ambulance, forward aid station, casualty collection point, and battlefield evacuation vehicle.

Unlike conventional military ambulances, the AV-35-AM was specifically designed to operate alongside mechanized formations under combat conditions. Its armor protection allows medical personnel to move closer to the fighting than would otherwise be possible, reducing casualty evacuation times and improving survival rates.

A defining feature of the vehicle is its rapidly convertible medical compartment, which allows it to transition between casualty treatment and casualty evacuation roles in only a few minutes.

Development

As mechanized warfare evolved, Gondaran planners recognized that traditional rear-area medical facilities often proved too distant to provide timely treatment to wounded soldiers.

Early field exercises demonstrated that casualties frequently suffered additional injury or death during prolonged evacuation from the battlefield. Army medical officers advocated for an armored vehicle capable of bringing advanced treatment capabilities closer to combat operations.

Rather than developing separate aid station and ambulance vehicles, engineers were directed to create a single platform capable of performing both missions. The resulting design utilized the standard AV-35 chassis and incorporated a modular medical compartment capable of rapid reconfiguration.

The vehicle entered service alongside other members of the AV-35 family and quickly became an essential component of mechanized operations.

Design

The AV-35-AM utilizes the standard AV-35 hull, drivetrain, suspension, transmission, and powerplant architecture. Extensive component commonality simplifies maintenance, logistics, training, and battlefield recovery.

Internally, the vehicle differs significantly from combat variants of the AV-35 family.

The troop compartment was stripped of combat equipment and rebuilt as a modular medical workspace. Treatment stations, casualty racks, medical storage systems, and support equipment were integrated into a flexible interior layout capable of supporting multiple mission profiles.

The resulting configuration allows the vehicle to function as both a mobile treatment facility and a casualty evacuation platform.

Crew and Organization

The AV-35-AM is normally operated by six personnel.

Position Duty
Vehicle Commander Commands vehicle and local security
Driver Vehicle operation
Senior Medic Triage and treatment supervision
Medic Casualty treatment
Medic Casualty treatment
Medical Assistant Casualty handling and medical support

The medical crew is trained to rapidly reconfigure the vehicle's interior to support changing battlefield requirements.

Convertible Medical Compartment

A defining feature of the AV-35-AM is its rapidly reconfigurable medical compartment.

Rather than maintaining separate treatment and evacuation variants, Gondaran engineers designed the vehicle around a modular interior system consisting of folding treatment tables, collapsible seating, retractable storage lockers, sliding equipment racks, removable medical carts, and fold-away casualty supports.

The system allows the vehicle to rapidly transition between two primary operating configurations:

  • Mobile Aid Mode
  • CASVAC Mode

Conversion between configurations can typically be completed in only a few minutes by the onboard medical crew without external assistance.

Mobile Aid Mode

In Mobile Aid Mode, the AV-35-AM functions as a forward armored aid station operating near the front lines.

The interior is configured with:

  • Fold-down treatment tables
  • Medical supply lockers
  • Plasma and blood storage
  • Diagnostic equipment
  • Casualty stabilization stations
  • Medical record storage
  • Folding seating for walking wounded

In this configuration the vehicle's primary mission is to stabilize casualties, prevent deaths, and return lightly wounded personnel to duty whenever possible.

Army doctrine emphasizes treatment as close to the battlefield as conditions allow.

CASVAC Mode

In CASVAC Mode, the AV-35-AM functions primarily as an armored casualty evacuation vehicle.

Treatment tables, storage racks, and non-essential equipment are folded, collapsed, or secured against the hull to maximize available patient space.

The interior can then accommodate substantially larger numbers of casualties.

Typical configurations include:

  • Multiple litter casualties
  • Walking wounded personnel
  • Mixed casualty loads

This mode is employed when casualty volume exceeds treatment capacity or when casualties must be evacuated to higher-echelon medical facilities.

Medical Equipment

Standard equipment carried by the AV-35-AM includes:

  • Surgical kits
  • Trauma supplies
  • Plasma and blood products
  • Oxygen equipment
  • Splints and braces
  • Morphine and pain management supplies
  • IV equipment
  • Field diagnostic equipment
  • Medical records and reporting materials

Equipment carried may vary depending on mission requirements and operational conditions.

Protection

The AV-35-AM utilizes the standard armor package employed throughout the AV-35 family.

Although protected by international conventions and military custom, Gondaran planners recognized that medical vehicles frequently operated within artillery zones and near active combat operations.

Standardized armor protection allows the vehicle to accompany mechanized formations while protecting medical personnel and casualties from small-arms fire, shell fragments, and battlefield debris.

Armament

The AV-35-AM carries no permanently mounted weapons.

The vehicle is protected by armor, mobility, and its status as a medical vehicle.

Crew members may carry personal weapons for self-defense when required, but the vehicle itself is not intended to participate in combat operations.

The removal of weapon systems allows additional internal volume to be dedicated to medical equipment and casualty care.

Mobility

The AV-35-AM retains the mobility characteristics of the standard AV-35 chassis.

Its common drivetrain and suspension allow medical personnel to accompany mechanized formations across difficult terrain while maintaining access to casualties under combat conditions.

The vehicle's mobility enables medical support to remain close to advancing units while retaining the ability to rapidly relocate as battlefield conditions change.

Operational Use

The AV-35-AM typically operates behind the leading assault elements while remaining significantly closer to combat than conventional rear-area medical facilities.

During offensive operations, casualties are evacuated from platoons and companies to the AV-35-AM for treatment and stabilization. Depending on the severity of injuries, personnel may be returned to duty, retained for observation, or evacuated to higher medical facilities.

The vehicle's convertible interior allows commanders and medical personnel to adapt quickly to changing casualty rates and operational requirements.

This flexibility makes the AV-35-AM one of the most valuable support vehicles within Gondaran mechanized formations.

Legacy

The AV-35-AM represented Gondara's commitment to maintaining medical support within mechanized warfare.

By combining treatment and evacuation functions into a single armored platform, the Army reduced logistical complexity while increasing the speed and quality of battlefield medical care.

Its modular medical compartment became one of the most distinctive and innovative features of the AV-35 family, allowing a single vehicle to perform missions that traditionally required multiple specialized platforms.
