Overview
The Endurance-Class Assault Carrier (SAC-35) is one of the most unconventional capital ships ever constructed by the Republic of Gondara Navy. Combining the capabilities of an assault carrier, cruiser, amphibious transport, and aviation support vessel into a single hull, the class serves as the amphibious centerpiece of every Gondaran Expeditionary Task Force.
Unlike conventional carriers, the Endurance-Class was designed around the requirements of the embarked Marine Expeditionary Unit rather than the air wing. Every major system aboard—from its vehicle garages and machine shops to its medical facilities, aviation assets, and cruiser-caliber artillery—exists to deploy, sustain, and support amphibious combat operations.
Development
The Endurance-Class originated as an ambitious proposal to create an independent amphibious strike force centered upon two assault carriers escorted only by fleet destroyers. Naval planners envisioned the pair operating as a self-contained expeditionary formation capable of transporting a complete Marine Expeditionary Unit, establishing local air superiority, providing cruiser-caliber naval gunfire support, and conducting amphibious assaults without requiring direct support from fleet carriers or battleships.
Operational analysis demonstrated that the concept was tactically sound. An Endurance Pair possessed sufficient aviation, artillery, landing craft, and embarked combat power to successfully conduct independent expeditionary operations under most anticipated combat conditions.
The Military Acquisition Board nevertheless declined to adopt the concept as originally proposed. The Board concluded that concentrating an entire Marine Expeditionary Unit, nearly one hundred aircraft, significant armored forces, and two of the Republic's most expensive capital ships into a lightly escorted formation presented an unacceptable strategic risk. While capable of defeating most expected opposition, the loss or crippling of even one assault carrier—particularly during vulnerable amphibious operations—could eliminate a substantial portion of Gondara's expeditionary capability through a single fortunate submarine attack, naval mine, or concentrated enemy strike.
Rather than rejecting the design, the Board reassigned the Endurance-Class as the amphibious centerpiece of the newly established Gondaran Expeditionary Task Force. Operating beneath the protection of fleet carriers, fast battleships, heavy cruisers, anti-aircraft cruisers, and fleet destroyers dramatically reduced operational risk while preserving the class's unique ability to rapidly project Marine combat power ashore.
Design
Flight Deck Arrangement
The Endurance-Class employs a unique asymmetrical layout unlike any contemporary warship.
The large starboard superstructure supports the navigation bridge and both triple 200 mm gun turrets, while the port-side flight deck extends well beyond the hull as a structural counterbalance. The arrangement permits simultaneous flight operations and naval bombardment by allowing the superstructure to shield the flight deck from the overpressure generated by the main battery.
Three aircraft elevators service a protected hangar capable of operating thirty-six frontline aircraft while accommodating twelve reserve aircraft below deck.
Main Battery
The primary armament consists of six 200 mm naval rifles mounted in two fully enclosed triple turrets located fore and aft of the starboard island.
Unlike fleet carriers, these guns are intended for continuous precision shore bombardment, destroying coastal defenses, artillery positions, hardened fortifications, bridges, and troop concentrations immediately ahead of Marine landings.
Amphibious Facilities
An enclosed stern well deck forms the heart of the vessel.
Heavy davits and internal handling rails allow rapid deployment of 12–15 LC-35 mechanized landing craft capable of transporting Gondaran armored vehicles directly to the beach.
Each ship embarks approximately 1,200 Marines together with vehicles, supplies, workshops, hospitals, maintenance facilities, and logistical support necessary to sustain expeditionary combat operations.
Two Endurance-Class Assault Carriers together transport one complete Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Protection
Protection emphasizes survivability during amphibious assault operations.
Armor includes:
- 150 mm Titanium/Steel belt armor protecting machinery, magazines, troop berthing, and the well deck.
- 50 mm armored flight deck.
- 150 mm turret protection.
- 25 mm splinter-resistant hangar doors.
Operational Doctrine
Within Gondaran doctrine, the Endurance-Class is not regarded as a transport ship carrying Marines. Rather, it is considered an integral component of the Marine Expeditionary Unit itself.
Every major system aboard—from its aviation facilities and cruiser-caliber artillery to its machine shops, vehicle garages, hospitals, repair facilities, and logistics spaces—exists to deploy and sustain the embarked Marines. Without its assigned Marine force, the Endurance-Class possesses no independent operational purpose.
The class serves as the amphibious warfare component of each Gondaran Expeditionary Task Force, operating under the protection of fleet carriers, fast battleships, cruisers, and destroyers while projecting Marine combat power ashore.

Legacy
The Endurance-Class fundamentally transformed Gondaran amphibious doctrine. Rather than treating amphibious operations as an extension of naval warfare, the class established the Marine Expeditionary Unit as the central element of Gondaran expeditionary strategy, with the assault carrier serving as its permanently assigned sea base.
Although originally conceived as an independent assault formation, the class ultimately proved most effective as the amphibious core of the Gondaran Expeditionary Task Force, where it combined its unique capabilities with the protection of the Republic's balanced blue-water fleet.
