The Murkwood Mountain System forms the eastern highland mass of Gondara, consisting of an extensive region of ancient folded mountains fully enveloped in dense forest. Covering approximately 296,000 square miles, the system represents one of the largest continuous forested mountain environments on the continent.
Unlike the sharp and exposed ridgelines of the Vidar Mountain System, Murkwood is defined by irregular terrain, continuous canopy coverage, and deeply incised valleys that obscure underlying structure.
Overview
The Murkwood system is characterized by broad, uneven highlands rather than a singular continuous mountain chain. Parallel and overlapping ridgelines form a complex terrain of slopes and valleys, with no consistent orientation across the region.
Forest coverage extends across nearly all elevations, concealing terrain features and limiting long-distance visibility. The system transitions gradually into surrounding regions rather than forming abrupt geographic boundaries.
Terrain
The mountains of Murkwood are the result of ancient folding and long-term erosion, producing rounded ridgelines and deeply cut valleys. Elevation changes are constant, with very little level ground across the system.
Ridge formations run in layered and irregular patterns, creating a terrain that is highly repetitive and difficult to navigate. Valleys are narrow and often enclosed, with drainage systems following long-established paths through the folded structure.
Unlike younger mountain systems, Murkwood lacks prominent exposed peaks, with only occasional high ridgelines breaking the forest canopy.
Forest Integration
Forest and mountain form a single continuous system within Murkwood. Dense hardwood forest covers nearly all terrain, extending from upper ridgelines through slopes and foothills to surrounding river and coastal boundaries.
Only the highest and most wind-exposed ridgelines show reduced tree coverage. Elsewhere, the canopy remains largely uninterrupted, obscuring terrain features and natural boundaries.
This integration produces a landscape in which elevation and vegetation cannot be easily separated, contributing to the region’s enclosed and continuous character.
Environmental Character
The Murkwood system presents a constrained and low-visibility environment shaped by terrain and canopy density. Movement is governed by ridgelines and valleys rather than direct routes, resulting in indirect travel across the region.
Moisture retention and limited airflow contribute to frequent fog and diffused light conditions, particularly within valleys and low elevations. Combined with dense vegetation and irregular terrain, this produces a spatially disorienting environment with limited visibility.
The repetition of terrain features and lack of clear reference points make navigation difficult without local knowledge.
Tectonic Origin
The Murkwood Mountain System is an ancient folded orogenic belt formed by the compression of Gondara’s continental crust during an early tectonic collision event. Over geological time, extensive erosion has reduced the system’s elevation profile while preserving its folded structure.
This process has produced rounded ridgelines, complex drainage systems, and stable terrain conditions that support continuous forest growth across the region.
Boundaries
The Murkwood system transitions gradually into surrounding regions:
- Westward into the Great Plains through thinning forest and reduced elevation
- Southward into the Wilds through increasingly irregular and undeveloped terrain
- Eastward toward Gondara’s coastal slopes, where ridgelines descend toward the ocean
The system does not form a singular continuous boundary, instead blending into adjacent regions through transitional terrain.
