'''Strike-class Battlecruiser''' was the premier long-range, high-speed battlecruiser class of the Republic of Gondara Navy. Authorized under the '''1922 naval expansion program''', the class was built for independent ocean-going strike missions, commerce interdiction, long-distance patrol, and rapid power projection across the South Pacific and toward [[Navarino]].

The class's defining feature was its unusual '''all-forward main battery''': eight 375 mm/45 naval guns carried in two quadruple turrets, with B turret superfiring over A turret. High speed, long endurance, and an ice-strengthened bow supported operations across Gondara's extensive maritime approaches. Both completed battlecruisers underwent a significant modernization in '''1935''', including the addition of '''12 twin 75 mm dual-purpose antiaircraft mounts (24 guns)'''.

== Development and Program History ==

The original four-hull construction program was divided between the Central Naval Yard and Delta Shipworks. The first two ships were completed as battlecruisers. Hulls 3 and 4 were redesigned while still on the slipways in 1927 and completed as the fast aircraft carriers ''Stalwart'' and ''Swift''.

The two battlecruisers were originally priced at '''$33,300,000 each''', for a combined baseline battlecruiser construction cost of '''$66,600,000'''. The aircraft carriers' separate construction costs are shown in the ship register; they are not included in the two-battlecruiser total. The cost of the 1935 refit has not been separately established.

==Overview==
=== Armor and Ice-Strengthened Bow ===

The '''Strike-class Battlecruiser''' was the premier long-range, high-speed capital ship of the Republic of Gondara Navy. Authorized under the 1922 naval expansion program, the class was engineered specifically for independent ocean-going strike missions, commerce interdiction, and rapid power projection across vast maritime expanses—such as the 3,500+ mile transit corridor down to Navarino.
The class employs a concentrated armored citadel with '''230 mm Krupp cemented belt armor'''. Main gunhouses have '''300 mm face armor and 210 mm side armor''', while the conning tower is protected by '''260 mm armor'''.

Departing from traditional scattered turret layouts, the *Strike*-class adopted an aggressive all-forward main battery consisting of **eight 375 mm /45 caliber naval guns housed in two 4-gun quad turrets** (A and B superfiring forward). By clustering the main battery forward and arranging her dual-purpose secondaries along the superstructure, designers compressed the main armored citadel box. The resulting structural and weight savings—achieved at an exceptionally cost-effective unit price of $33.3 million—allowed Gondara to invest directly into a **32.5-knot trial speed**, a **7,500 nmi operational range**, a **50 mm reinforced icebreaker bow** for polar operations, and robust **230 mm belt armor**.
For service in southern waters, the bow incorporates a '''50 mm reinforced ice-strengthened stem plate''' supported by heavy structural framing. This feature supports travel through cold-water and sub-Antarctic approaches but does not make the battlecruiser a specialized icebreaker.

==Program History & Sister Hulls==
Sixteen oil-fired water-tube boilers feed four sets of geared steam turbines driving four shafts. The original machinery was rated at '''140,000 SHP''', increasing to '''148,000 SHP''' following the 1935 modernization.

The four-hull expansion program was split between the Central Naval Yard and Delta Shipworks. While Hulls 1 and 2 were completed as the *Strike*-class battlecruisers, Hulls 3 and 4 were re-engineered on the slipways in 1927 into the *Strike*-class fast aircraft carriers (*Stalwart* and *Swift*) to provide matched-speed aviation support for long-range task forces.
The class achieved a design trial speed of '''32.5 knots''', reduced to approximately '''31.5 knots''' after the fitting of antitorpedo bulges. Cruising range is '''7,500 nautical miles at 15 knots'''.

==Design & Technical Specifications==
With the new 75 mm mountings fitted, each Strike-class battlecruiser carries:

===All-Forward Quad Main Battery===
* '''125 mm DP:''' 10 twin mountings — '''20 guns'''.
The defining characteristic of the class is its forward main battery arrangement:
* '''75 mm DP:''' 12 twin mountings — '''24 guns''', added during the 1935 refit.
* **Turret 'A':** Forward main deck quad mounting housing four 375 mm /45 guns.
* '''12.5 mm HMG:''' 24 twin mountings — '''48 guns'''.
* **Turret 'B':** Superfiring quad mounting directly above Turret 'A', housing an additional four 375 mm /45 guns.

This configuration allows the ship to bring 100% of its heavy main armament (all 8 guns) to bear directly ahead during high-speed chases and intercept runs, eliminating firing blind spots during pursuit.
The new 75 mm mounts increase antiaircraft firepower without reducing the existing 125 mm or 12.5 mm batteries. Their precise individual deck positions are not specified in this class record.

===Secondary & Anti-Aircraft Defense===
The 1939 addition of an early search radar array is a later modernization and is not treated as part of the original 1935 equipment fit.
* **Dual-Purpose Battery:** Surface defense against destroyers and heavy anti-aircraft fire are managed by **ten dual 125 mm DP turrets** (20 barrels total) positioned along the flanks and superstructure.
* **Close-in Point Defense:** Point-blank anti-aircraft coverage relies on **24 dual 12.5 mm heavy machine gun mounts** (48 barrels total), each equipped with individual $12.5\text{ mm}$ splinter shields to protect exposed gun crews.

===Icebreaker Bow & Propulsion===
== Operational Doctrine ==
To ensure reliable navigation through sub-Antarctic ice fields and cold-weather transit routes, the forward stem features a **50 mm reinforced ice-stem plate** backed by heavy framing. Power is provided by 16 oil-fired water-tube boilers driving four-shaft geared steam turbines producing 140,000 SHP, yielding a high-speed trial mark of **32.5 knots** and an operational radius of **7,500 nautical miles at 15 knots**.

----
The Strike class was designed for independent long-range commerce interdiction and as a fast striking element within larger naval formations. Its principal missions include:

==1935 Modernization Program==
* High-speed interception of hostile surface forces and commerce raiders.
* Long-range patrols and commerce warfare across the Pacific and southern maritime routes.
* Leading surface task forces where speed and forward-directed main-gun fire are advantageous.
* Escorting and supporting high-speed carrier formations when assigned.
* Operations in cold-water approaches toward Navarino and sub-Antarctic routes.

Both completed battlecruisers underwent a major refit in 1935:
The class's strengths are strategic mobility, concentrated forward firepower, and high tactical speed. The all-forward main battery also imposes limitations when engaging targets astern, making position and maneuver particularly important.
1. **Anti-Torpedo Bulges:** Fitted along the waterline to improve underwater defense against torpedoes and stabilize the platform, adjusting the beam to 102 ft and post-refit speed to a steady **31.5 knots**.
=== Ships and Associated Hulls ===
2. **Deck Protection:** Main armored deck over critical magazines was thickened to 90 mm to mitigate high-angle plunging fire and bomb attacks.

Strike-class Battlecruiser was the premier long-range, high-speed battlecruiser class of the Republic of Gondara Navy. Authorized under the 1922 naval expansion program, the class was built for independent ocean-going strike missions, commerce interdiction, long-distance patrol, and rapid power projection across the South Pacific and toward Navarino.

The class's defining feature was its unusual all-forward main battery: eight 375 mm/45 naval guns carried in two quadruple turrets, with B turret superfiring over A turret. High speed, long endurance, and an ice-strengthened bow supported operations across Gondara's extensive maritime approaches. Both completed battlecruisers underwent a significant modernization in 1935, including the addition of 12 twin 75 mm dual-purpose antiaircraft mounts (24 guns).

Development and Program History

The original four-hull construction program was divided between the Central Naval Yard and Delta Shipworks. The first two ships were completed as battlecruisers. Hulls 3 and 4 were redesigned while still on the slipways in 1927 and completed as the fast aircraft carriers Stalwart and Swift.

The two battlecruisers were originally priced at $33,300,000 each, for a combined baseline battlecruiser construction cost of $66,600,000. The aircraft carriers' separate construction costs are shown in the ship register; they are not included in the two-battlecruiser total. The cost of the 1935 refit has not been separately established.

Design

All-Forward Main Battery

The principal battery consists of eight 375 mm/45 naval guns arranged in two quadruple turrets, both forward of the superstructure:

  • A turret: Four 375 mm/45 guns in a forward main-deck mounting.
  • B turret: Four 375 mm/45 guns in a superfiring mounting immediately behind and above A turret.

This arrangement concentrates all eight heavy guns on the forward approach, supporting high-speed pursuit and interception. By placing both main turrets forward, Gondaran designers reduced the length of the principal armored citadel and reserved displacement for propulsion, protection, and fuel. The class does not possess a rear main-battery turret.

Secondary and Antiaircraft Batteries

The original secondary battery consists of 20 × 125 mm dual-purpose guns in 10 twin mountings, arranged along the flanks and superstructure. These weapons are retained following the 1935 refit.

The close-range antiaircraft battery consists of 48 × 12.5 mm heavy machine guns in 24 twin mountings, with light gun-crew shielding. This battery is also retained as part of the modernized armament.

The 1935 modernization adds a separate heavy antiaircraft battery of 24 × 75 mm dual-purpose guns in 12 twin mountings. These are additional mounts, not replacements for the 125 mm guns or the 12.5 mm machine guns. They provide an intermediate layer of antiaircraft fire between the heavier 125 mm battery and the close-range machine guns.

Armor and Ice-Strengthened Bow

The class employs a concentrated armored citadel with 230 mm Krupp cemented belt armor. Main gunhouses have 300 mm face armor and 210 mm side armor, while the conning tower is protected by 260 mm armor.

For service in southern waters, the bow incorporates a 50 mm reinforced ice-strengthened stem plate supported by heavy structural framing. This feature supports travel through cold-water and sub-Antarctic approaches but does not make the battlecruiser a specialized icebreaker.

Propulsion and Endurance

Sixteen oil-fired water-tube boilers feed four sets of geared steam turbines driving four shafts. The original machinery was rated at 140,000 SHP, increasing to 148,000 SHP following the 1935 modernization.

The class achieved a design trial speed of 32.5 knots, reduced to approximately 31.5 knots after the fitting of antitorpedo bulges. Cruising range is 7,500 nautical miles at 15 knots.

Aircraft, Sensors, and Fire Control

Each battlecruiser operates two floatplanes from a single stern catapult. Original underwater detection equipment consists of early passive hydrophones. The main and secondary batteries rely on heavy optical coincidence rangefinders, with the fire-control arrangements upgraded during the 1935 refit.

The class entered service without radar. An early search radar array was fitted in 1939, according to the class modernization record.

1935 Modernization Program

Both completed battlecruisers underwent a major refit in 1935. The program retained the class's basic long-range strike role while improving underwater protection, deck defense, machinery power, and antiaircraft firepower.

Area Pre-refit arrangement 1935 modernization
Underwater protection Original 94 ft beam Antitorpedo bulges added; beam increased to 102 ft
Armored deck 65 mm protection Increased to 90 mm over critical spaces
Propulsion power 140,000 SHP Increased to 148,000 SHP
Maximum speed 32.5 knots on trials Approximately 31.5 knots following refit
75 mm dual-purpose AA Not part of stated original battery 12 twin mounts added — 24 guns total
125 mm secondary battery 10 twin mounts — 20 guns Retained unchanged
12.5 mm AA machine guns 24 twin mounts — 48 guns Retained unchanged
Submerged torpedo tubes 4 × 533 mm Removed
Fire control Original optical systems Modernized optical fire control

Modernized Antiaircraft Establishment

With the new 75 mm mountings fitted, each Strike-class battlecruiser carries:

  • 125 mm DP: 10 twin mountings — 20 guns.
  • 75 mm DP: 12 twin mountings — 24 guns, added during the 1935 refit.
  • 12.5 mm HMG: 24 twin mountings — 48 guns.

The new 75 mm mounts increase antiaircraft firepower without reducing the existing 125 mm or 12.5 mm batteries. Their precise individual deck positions are not specified in this class record.

The 1939 addition of an early search radar array is a later modernization and is not treated as part of the original 1935 equipment fit.

Operational Doctrine

The Strike class was designed for independent long-range commerce interdiction and as a fast striking element within larger naval formations. Its principal missions include:

  • High-speed interception of hostile surface forces and commerce raiders.
  • Long-range patrols and commerce warfare across the Pacific and southern maritime routes.
  • Leading surface task forces where speed and forward-directed main-gun fire are advantageous.
  • Escorting and supporting high-speed carrier formations when assigned.
  • Operations in cold-water approaches toward Navarino and sub-Antarctic routes.

The class's strengths are strategic mobility, concentrated forward firepower, and high tactical speed. The all-forward main battery also imposes limitations when engaging targets astern, making position and maneuver particularly important.
