Relationship Types

Gondaran society organizes social life through several formally recognized relationship structures. These relationships define authority, responsibility, and household organization within the broader social order.

Most relationships operate within the framework of guardianship, household formation, and community oversight. Institutions such as the Sewing Circle help administer certain stages of these relationships.

Guardians

Guardians are adult men who hold lawful responsibility and authority over those placed under their care. Guardianship forms the foundational structure of Gondaran social order and governs the organization of households, the protection of dependents, and the oversight of women's social placement.

Guardians are responsible for protection, provision, and moral leadership within the household. They also represent the household in community affairs and answer for certain civil conduct of those under their guardianship.

Wards

A Ward is any person who exists under the lawful guardianship of another authority. Within Gondaran society this most commonly refers to women living under the authority of a father, brother, husband, or other lawful guardian.

Wards receive protection and provision from their guardian while owing obedience and respect within the household structure. Guardians are expected to guide, correct, and provide for their wards, while the ward's conduct reflects upon the reputation and responsibility of the guardian.

Women who have not yet entered companionship remain wards within their guardian's household until a new guardianship arrangement is formed.

Companions

Companionship represents the primary adult partnership between a man and a woman and serves as the normal foundation for the formation of a new household. Through companionship, a woman transfers from the guardianship of her previous household to the guardianship of her companion.

Companionship involves shared domestic life, mutual commitment, and participation in the public and religious life of the community. Companion households form the basic social unit of Gondaran society.

While companionship carries strong expectations of stability, it is not considered indissoluble and may be dissolved under certain circumstances through community mediation. Some long-standing companionships later develop into sacred Covenant Unions.

Covenanted Couples

A Covenanted Couple is a companion pair that has entered a sacred covenant before God through religious ceremony. Covenant unions represent the highest form of relational commitment within Gondaran culture.

These unions are intended to be lifelong partnerships and carry strong spiritual and social expectations. Covenanted couples are often viewed as models of household stability and shared devotion within their communities.

Because covenant unions are sacred commitments, violations of covenant vows carry severe social and reputational consequences.

Daughters of the Circle

In rare circumstances where a woman cannot or will not exist under male guardianship, institutional guardianship may be administered by the Sewing Circle. Women placed under this authority are known as Daughters of the Circle.

Daughtership serves as the structural safeguard ensuring that no woman remains socially unplaced within Gondaran society.
