Overview

The AV-35-MAA is the medium self-propelled anti-aircraft variant of the AV-35 armored vehicle family.

It mounts the MAA-36 50mm Autocannon in place of the lighter dual 25mm turret used on the AV-35-LAA, providing greater range, heavier projectile effect, and improved lethality against ground attack aircraft.

The vehicle is designed to accompany mechanized formations and provide medium-layer air defense between light 25mm systems and heavy 75mm high-angle guns.

Design Relationship

The AV-35-MAA shares its basic hull layout with the AV-35-LAA and AV-35-C.

The troop compartment of the carrier configuration is replaced by ammunition storage, feed support, and turret service space. The primary difference from the LAA variant is the installation of the larger 50mm powered turret assembly.

Related AV-35 variants include:

Layout

The AV-35-MAA uses the standard AV-35 hull with a larger medium anti-aircraft turret.

The forward compartment contains the driver and command/radio position. The central turret position mounts the 50mm powered AA system, while the rear compartment is used for ammunition storage and crew access.

Crew arrangement:

  • Driver
  • Commander / radio operator
  • Gunner
  • Loader
  • Assistant loader / ammunition handler

The enlarged turret and 50mm ammunition reduce internal working space compared to the LAA variant.

Armament

Primary Weapon

The 50mm cannon provides:

  • Medium-range anti-aircraft fire
  • High projectile lethality
  • Effective engagement against ground attack aircraft
  • Secondary use against light vehicles and exposed positions

The weapon is intended to destroy or critically damage aircraft with a single effective hit or close-proximity burst rather than relying on high-volume saturation fire.

Ammunition Feed

The MAA-36 does not utilize belt-fed ammunition due to the size and weight of 50mm rounds. Instead, the system uses a powered ready-feed magazine supplied by rigid 5-round tray cassettes.

The ready-feed magazine holds 40 rounds and allows the gun to fire short, high-volume bursts without interruption. Additional ammunition is stored in the former troop compartment and transferred to the turret by the loader and assistant loader.

The AV-35-MAA carries approximately 200 rounds total:

  • 40 rounds in the powered ready-feed magazine
  • 160 rounds in protected hull reserve racks
  • Reloaded using 4-round rigid trays

Each complete round weighs approximately 10–11 pounds, with each 5-round tray weighing approximately 50–55 pounds.

This system avoids the reliability limitations of large-caliber belt-fed ammunition while maintaining a practical rate of fire for anti-aircraft engagement.

Ammunition

The AV-35-MAA carries 50mm ammunition for anti-aircraft and secondary ground roles.

Common ammunition includes:

  • HE — primary anti-aircraft projectile
  • HE-I — aircraft destruction and ignition
  • Tracer — fire correction
  • AP — limited use against light armored targets

The larger 50mm rounds reduce total ammunition capacity compared to the 25mm LAA variant.

Fire Capability

The AV-35-MAA is optimized for controlled, high-impact fire.

  • Elevation: -5° to +90°
  • Traverse: 360°
  • Rate of fire: ~120 rounds per minute
  • Effective anti-aircraft range: ~4,000 m
  • Maximum horizontal range: ~14,500 m

Unlike the AV-35-LAA, which relies on dense streams of 25mm fire, the MAA uses fewer, heavier projectiles with greater destructive effect per round.

Protection

The AV-35-MAA retains the standard AV-35 base armor scheme:

  • Frontal: 25mm at 60°
  • Sides: 18.75mm at 20°
  • Rear: 9.375mm at 20°
  • Roof: 12.5mm
  • Floor: 12.5mm central shallow-V, tapering to 9.375mm at edges

The turret follows the AV-35 sloped turret armor pattern, with armor plates angled at approximately 40°.

This provides meaningful protection against heavy machine gun fire, shell fragments, and some light autocannon threats at range. The vehicle remains vulnerable to dedicated anti-tank weapons and medium-caliber direct fire.

Amphibious Capability

The AV-35-MAA is not amphibious.

The weight of the 50mm turret assembly and ammunition load exceeds the AV-35 chassis amphibious limit. River crossing requires bridging, ferry support, or engineering assistance.

Mobility

At approximately 24–25 tons, the AV-35-MAA remains mobile but is less responsive than the lighter AV-35-LAA.

It maintains sufficient speed to accompany mechanized formations, but the heavier turret and ammunition load reduce acceleration, turning response, and soft-ground performance.

Operational Role

The AV-35-MAA serves as the medium air-defense layer of Gondaran mechanized formations.

Primary roles include:

  • Protection against ground attack aircraft
  • Engagement of aircraft beyond 25mm range
  • Defense of armored columns and assembly areas
  • Reinforcement of light AA screens
  • Secondary direct fire against light ground targets

The vehicle is most effective when paired with AV-35-LAA vehicles, allowing the LAA to provide close-range volume fire while the MAA engages aircraft farther out with heavier projectiles.

Limitations

  • Not amphibious
  • Lower ammunition capacity than 25mm AA vehicles
  • Larger turret profile
  • Reduced responsiveness compared to lighter AV-35 variants
  • Requires trained crew for accurate aircraft engagement
  • Vulnerable to dedicated anti-tank weapons

Summary

The AV-35-MAA provides Gondaran mechanized forces with a mobile medium anti-aircraft platform capable of destroying ground attack aircraft with high-impact 50mm fire.

By replacing the dual 25mm turret of the AV-35-LAA with the heavier MAA-36 50mm Autocannon turret, the MAA sacrifices amphibious capability and ammunition volume in exchange for greater range, projectile lethality, and medium-layer air defense coverage.
