Overview

The F-38 Ghoul is the primary first-generation fighter aircraft of the Gondaran Air Corps. Designed as both a front-line fighter and coastal interceptor, the aircraft combines high speed, heavy firepower, and exceptional survivability into a standardized combat platform suitable for the defense of Gondara's vast territory.

Unlike many contemporary fighters, the Ghoul places significant emphasis on pilot protection, systems redundancy, and battle damage resistance. These characteristics reflect Gondaran military doctrine, which prioritizes preservation of trained personnel and long-range operational endurance.

The F-38 served as the foundation of Gondaran fighter aviation during the opening years of the Second World War.

Development

Development of the F-38 began as part of Gondara's effort to establish a domestically produced modern fighter force capable of defending the continent's extensive coastlines and supporting expeditionary operations.

Engineers sought to balance speed, firepower, durability, and ease of maintenance while avoiding excessive complexity. Particular emphasis was placed upon pilot survivability and the ability to return damaged aircraft to service quickly.

The resulting design employed a powerful radial engine, heavy armament, extensive armor protection, and multiple redundant flight systems.

The aircraft entered service in 1938 and rapidly became the standard fighter of the Gondaran Air Corps.

Design

The F-38 utilizes a low-wing monoplane configuration powered by a single Gondaran Vortex Major radial engine.

The aircraft incorporates:

  • All-metal stressed-skin construction
  • Enclosed cockpit
  • Retractable landing gear
  • NACA engine cowling
  • Self-sealing fuel tanks
  • Redundant hydraulic systems
  • Mechanical flight-control backup system

Although somewhat heavier than many contemporary fighters, the Ghoul compensates through superior durability and concentrated firepower.

Armament

Primary Armament

  • 1 × 25mm Heavy Hub Cannon
  • 2 × 12.5mm Heavy Machine Guns

The hub-mounted cannon fires directly through the propeller axis, providing excellent accuracy and concentration of fire.

The aircraft's armament was designed to destroy:

  • Enemy fighters
  • Bombers
  • Maritime patrol aircraft
  • Light naval targets

External Stores

Underwing hardpoints allow carriage of:

  • 2 × 100 lb tactical bombs

or

  • 6 × 50 lb fragmentation bombs

These stores permit limited ground attack and anti-personnel missions.

Protection and Survivability

A defining characteristic of the F-38 is its extensive survivability features.

Pilot Armor

The pilot is protected by a 6.25mm face-hardened steel armor bulkhead positioned behind the seat.

The armor extends upward behind the pilot's head and neck and is designed to defeat rifle-caliber machine gun fire at combat ranges.

Armored Windscreen

The forward cockpit windscreen incorporates a bullet-resistant armored glass panel approximately 1.5–2 inches thick.

This protection is intended to resist:

  • Rifle-caliber projectiles
  • Fragmentation
  • Light anti-aircraft debris

during frontal engagements.

Radial Engine Protection

The Vortex Major radial engine provides substantial passive protection.

Enemy projectiles approaching from the front must penetrate two rows of steel cylinders and associated engine components before reaching the cockpit structure.

Self-Sealing Fuel Tanks

The F-38 utilizes rubberized self-sealing fuel tanks.

When punctured, the tank material rapidly expands upon contact with fuel, sealing the opening and reducing the risk of fire or fuel loss.

Redundant Hydraulic Systems

Primary and secondary hydraulic circuits are routed independently through opposite sides of the aircraft.

Automatic isolation valves prevent loss of both systems from a single hit.

If one system is damaged, the second assumes full operational control.

Mechanical Reversion System

In the event of total hydraulic failure, flight controls automatically revert to direct mechanical cable operation.

Although significantly more difficult to operate, this system allows pilots to maintain controlled flight and return damaged aircraft to base.

Performance

Specification Value
Maximum Speed 342 mph
Range 600 mi combat / 850 mi patrol
Service Ceiling 31,500 ft
Rate of Climb 3,150 ft/min
Maximum Dive Speed 475 mph
360° Turn Time 12.8 seconds
Roll Rate 110°/sec at 260 mph

Operational Role

The F-38 performs several critical missions:

  • Air superiority
  • Coastal interception
  • Fleet defense
  • Bomber interception
  • Tactical escort
  • Limited ground attack

The aircraft's combination of heavy armament and exceptional durability makes it particularly effective against bomber formations and maritime targets.

F-38N Sea Ghoul

The F-38N Sea Ghoul is a navalized variant developed for carrier operations.

Modifications include:

  • Strengthened landing gear
  • Carrier arresting equipment
  • Naval communications package
  • Reinforced airframe
Specification F-38N
Gross Weight 6,015 lb
Maximum Speed 334 mph
Rate of Climb 2,750 ft/min

The Sea Ghoul sacrifices some performance in exchange for carrier compatibility and maritime durability.

Summary

The F-38 Ghoul established the foundation of Gondaran fighter aviation through its combination of firepower, survivability, and operational flexibility. While heavier than many contemporary fighters, its robust construction, pilot protection systems, and redundant controls made it one of the most resilient combat aircraft of its generation.
