Novak Steppe
Novak Steppe is a major geographic region within the broader Novak Region of central Gondara, characterized by stepped terrain descending from the Vidar mountain system toward the Great River plains. The region contains both the arid steppe lands of the State of Novak and the fertile river plains of Aurelia, reflecting a shared cultural origin but sharply divergent environments.
Geography
The Novak Steppe extends from the eastern slopes of the Vidar mountain system to the Great River basin. The terrain is defined by a series of descending plateaus, forming distinct elevation “steps” that structure movement, settlement, and resource access.
The western portion consists of elevated steppe and foothill terrain, while the eastern portion transitions into the flat and fertile plains of the Great River.
The region lies within two modern states:
- Novak — occupying the steppe and foothill systems
- Aurelia — occupying the river plains and containing Aurelia City, the capital of Gondara
Both states originate from the same historical territory but differ significantly in environment and economic function.
Terrain Composition
The Novak Steppe is composed of layered terrain zones:
- High Step — rocky, mineral-rich foothill zone near the Vidar ranges
- Mid Step — open grassland forming the primary movement and grazing zone
- Low Step — transitional land approaching the river basin
- River Plains — flat, fertile agricultural land within Aurelia
Vegetation is approximately:
- 90% grassland
- 10% scattered woodland, concentrated near tributaries and the river basin
The stepped terrain creates natural barriers, crossings, and movement corridors across the region.
Hydrology
Water in the region is supplied by tributaries descending from the Vidar mountains.
These tributaries:
- flow across the step levels
- create localized fertile zones
- feed into the Great River
The eastern river system supports large-scale agriculture, while the steppe relies on scattered and seasonal water sources.
Human Presence
Human occupation reflects both historical patterns and modern development.
Historical System
The region was traditionally inhabited by the Novak Tribe, whose territory included both the steppe and river plains.
Their system consisted of:
- Veinholds — permanent foothill strongholds built around mineral deposits
- Steppe Bands — mobile groups operating across the grasslands
This dual system allowed survival in a region with limited agricultural capacity.
Modern Development (1930)
In the modern period, the region is divided between two states:
- The State of Novak — controlling the steppe, foothills, and resource zones
- The State of Aurelia — controlling the river plains and administrative center
Settlement patterns include:
- Veinhold-derived towns in the foothills
- Resource extraction sites across the steppe
- Dense agricultural and urban development in Aurelia
Resource Profile
For a more indepth view of greater Gondaran resources please see: Mineral Analysis of Gondara
The Novak Steppe is one of the most resource-critical regions in Gondara, combining mineral wealth, energy production, and grazing capacity.
Metallurgical Resources
- Iron deposits along Vidar foothills
- Coal supporting early and modern industry
- Mineral veins forming the basis of Veinhold systems
- Secondary workable metals across foothill zones
Energy Resources
- Major onshore oil reserves concentrated along the steppe–foothill transition
- Primary petroleum production region of Gondara
- Associated natural gas deposits
- Localized hydroelectric generation at step-level water drops
Pastoral Resources
- Extensive grazing land supporting large-scale herd movement
- Native mount systems centered on the Novak Strider
- Open terrain supporting hunting and mobility
Resource Character
The western steppe favors extraction, mobility, and endurance-based survival, while the eastern river plains support stable agriculture and dense settlement. Together, these systems form one of the most economically important regions in Gondara.
Strategic Character
The Novak Steppe functions as a transition zone between Gondara’s interior and its agricultural core.
- The steppe enables rapid movement and resource extraction
- The foothills provide defensive and industrial anchoring
- The river plains support population and governance
The region’s oil production and proximity to the capital make it one of the most strategically significant areas in Gondara.
