Overview

The AV-35-HAA is the heavy self-propelled anti-aircraft variant of the AV-35 vehicle family. Built on the open gun-bay chassis used by the AV-35-HG, it mounts the HAA-36 75mm Cannon to provide mobile, high-altitude air defense.

Unlike lighter mobile AA systems, the AV-35-HAA functions as a transportable heavy gun platform, combining mobility with the firepower of a fixed anti-aircraft battery.

Early AV-35-HAA vehicles were initially fielded using the HAA-33 75mm system, providing Gondaran forces with their first effective mobile heavy anti-aircraft capability. While capable, the HAA-33 placed a significant workload on gun crews and lacked the sustained engagement efficiency required against large or prolonged air attacks.

With the introduction of the HAA-36 in 1939, AV-35-HAA platforms were progressively upgraded. The improved system enhanced crew workflow, increased sustained rate of fire, and provided more consistent fire-control integration. These improvements allowed batteries to maintain coordinated engagement over longer periods, significantly increasing effectiveness against organized bomber formations.

This transition reflects the shift from functional anti-aircraft capability to fully integrated, sustained air defense operations within Gondaran doctrine.

Design Relationship

The AV-35-HAA shares its base chassis with:

  • AV-35-HG — Self-Propelled Howitzer
  • AV-35-C — Mechanized Assault Carrier

The rear troop compartment is replaced by an open gun bay and ammunition storage, allowing the installation of the full HAA-36 system.

Layout

The AV-35-HAA features a forward enclosed crew compartment and a rear open gun bay.

Crew arrangement:

Forward compartment (travel position):

  • Driver
  • Commander
  • Radio / fire-control operator
  • Ammunition coordinator

Rear gun bay (combat position):

  • Gunner
  • Fuse setter
  • Loader 1
  • Loader 2

During movement, crew members may reposition between compartments as required.

Armament

Primary Weapon

The weapon is mounted in an open high-angle configuration, allowing:

  • Elevation: -6° to +85°
  • Full 360° traverse
  • High-altitude engagement capability

The gun is designed for timed-fuze anti-aircraft fire and area denial rather than direct-fire combat.

Ammunition

The AV-35-HAA carries approximately 80 rounds of fixed QF 75mm ammunition.

Ammunition types include:

  • HE-TF (High Explosive, Time Fuze)
  • HE-I (High Explosive Incendiary)
  • AP (limited ground use)
  • Illumination

Rounds are stored in protected hull racks beneath and forward of the gun bay, with ready rounds staged near the breech for rapid loading.

Stabilization and Firing

The AV-35-HAA is not designed to fire while moving.

Before engagement, the vehicle must:

  • Halt
  • Deploy hydraulic stabilization legs
  • Level the chassis

Deployment time is approximately 90 seconds.

Once stabilized, the vehicle operates as a fixed heavy anti-aircraft platform, capable of sustained high-angle fire.

Mobility

Despite its heavy weapon system, the AV-35-HAA retains mobility consistent with the AV-35 platform:

  • Road speed: ~30–35 mph
  • Operational range: ~150–180 miles

However, its role is not frontline maneuver but rapid redeployment between defensive positions.

Protection

The AV-35-HAA retains the standard AV-35 armor scheme:

  • Frontal: 25mm at 60°
  • Sides: 18.75mm at 20°
  • Rear: 9.375mm at 20°
  • Roof: 12.5mm
  • Floor: 12.5mm shallow V

The open gun bay leaves the rear crew exposed to small arms and fragmentation, making positioning and protection critical.

Operational Role

The AV-35-HAA forms the heavy layer of Gondaran mobile air defense.

Primary roles include:

  • Engagement of high-altitude aircraft
  • Protection of armored formations and logistics hubs
  • Reinforcement of static AA positions
  • Area denial against bomber formations

The system operates in coordination with:

Limitations

  • Cannot fire while moving
  • Requires ~90 seconds to deploy
  • Open crew compartment reduces protection
  • Limited effectiveness against fast low-altitude targets
  • Large crew requirement

Summary

The AV-35-HAA provides Gondaran forces with a mobile heavy anti-aircraft capability, bridging the gap between fixed gun batteries and mechanized formations. While requiring deployment before firing, it delivers powerful high-altitude engagement capability wherever it can be brought into position.
