Overview
The Dominance-Class Fleet Carrier is the Republic of Gondara Navy's first true fleet carrier and the central aviation platform of the Gondaran Expeditionary Task Force. Commissioned in 1939, the class marked the formal transition of Gondaran naval doctrine from a gun-centered battle fleet to a carrier-centered expeditionary fleet.
Unlike earlier Gondaran carriers, which existed primarily to defend the fleet or support limited operations, the Dominance-Class was designed to make naval aviation the fleet's primary offensive arm. Every major surface combatant in the Expeditionary Task Force was expected to protect, support, or exploit the striking power generated by the carrier's air wing.
Development
Gondaran carrier development began under Archon Alexander Vidar in 1915, when older battlecruisers and raiders were converted into experimental aviation ships. These early conversions demonstrated that aircraft could scout, spot for naval gunfire, and extend the fleet's awareness beyond the horizon.
By 1925, this experience produced the Ranger-Class, a small-capacity fleet defense carrier intended to protect the battleline with fighter cover, reconnaissance, and spotting aircraft. The Ranger-Class reflected the older doctrine that aircraft supported the fleet while battleships and cruisers remained the decisive weapons.
By 1935, Vidar concluded that this doctrine was no longer sufficient. Aircraft were no longer viewed merely as defensive tools or scouting assets, but as long-range striking weapons capable of deciding fleet actions before surface forces reached visual range. This shift produced the Dominance-Class, a large carrier optimized for offensive air power, high sortie generation, and deep-ocean strike operations.
The class was difficult to approve. Critics argued that Gondara lacked the industrial depth to build large carriers in quantity and that smaller, harder-to-risk carriers better suited the Republic's traditional fleet-defense doctrine. Vidar ultimately prevailed, arguing that Gondara could not outproduce larger powers and therefore had to build a small number of exceptionally capable carriers around which the rest of the fleet would be organized.
Design
Aviation Facilities
The Dominance-Class employs a full-length flight deck and a high-capacity open hangar system designed for rapid launch cycles. Aircraft engines may be warmed below decks prior to launch, reducing deck congestion and increasing sortie generation during sustained operations.
The aviation plant includes two heavy hydraulic catapults and three heavy-lift elevators: one port deck-edge elevator, one starboard deck-edge elevator, and one forward centerline elevator.
The class can operate either seventy-two large aircraft, including twin-engine naval strike aircraft, or up to ninety-six smaller single-engine aircraft depending on mission requirements.
Protection
The class uses an unarmored Titanwood/Steel composite flight deck to reduce topweight and preserve aircraft capacity. Heavier protection is concentrated around the hangar deck, aviation fuel bunkers, magazines, machinery spaces, and underwater defense system.
This arrangement reflects Gondaran doctrine that the carrier's survival depended primarily on the surrounding fleet screen, combat air patrol, and early destruction of enemy strike forces rather than passive armor alone.
Defensive Armament
The Dominance-Class carries no cruiser-caliber surface artillery. Surface protection is entrusted entirely to its escorts.
Its onboard weapons are dedicated to layered anti-aircraft defense, centered on dual-purpose 125 mm and 75 mm batteries supported by automatic cannon and heavy machine guns.
Future Growth
The carrier was constructed with an uncluttered island, reinforced mast structures, expanded communications spaces, and electrical capacity for future radar integration. These provisions reflected Gondara's expectation that fleet aviation would increasingly depend on centralized air search, fighter direction, and electronic coordination.
Operational Doctrine
The Dominance-Class serves as the primary offensive weapon of the Expeditionary Task Force.
Its responsibilities include:
- Fleet air superiority.
- Long-range reconnaissance.
- Anti-shipping strike operations.
- Combat air patrol.
- Anti-submarine aviation.
- Fleet strike coordination.
- Fighter direction following radar integration.
Within Gondaran doctrine, the Fleet Carrier commands aviation operations while the Sarthuun-Class Fast Battleship directs major surface engagements. Overall command remains vested in the embarked Fleet Admiral regardless of flagship assignment.
The arrival of the Dominance-Class fundamentally changed the purpose of the fleet. Battleships, heavy cruisers, anti-aircraft cruisers, and destroyers no longer existed primarily to bring the battleline into gun range. Their central purpose became protecting the carrier long enough for its air wing to find and destroy the enemy first.

Legacy
The Dominance-Class represented the Third Archon Reform in physical form. Earlier Gondaran carriers had proven that aircraft could assist and protect the fleet; the Dominance-Class proved that the fleet could be built around aircraft.
Although the Republic lacked the resources to build fleet carriers in American numbers, Gondaran engineers concentrated national effort into three exceptionally capable aviation platforms. Each ship became the centerpiece of an Expeditionary Task Force and one of the most strategically valuable assets in the Republic's arsenal.
The class established the foundation of Gondaran carrier-centered naval warfare, in which surface ships existed not as the primary offensive arm, but as the protective system that allowed naval aviation to decide battles at range.
